paralegal definition

The layperson’s paralegal definition could be described as someone who assists a lawyer and performs many of the same tasks as a lawyer but is restricted in the sense that she does not have the authority to give legal advice or present cases in court. It is ultimately the lawyer who takes responsibility for the legal work for any particular client but due to time restraints she will rely on her paralegal assistant to perform many of the tasks that are more administrative in nature and don’t require directly interfacing with the client.
